The Zanzibar Slave Chambers were constructed around 1880 within a cave that is situated just 2 kilometers from the seaside. The area is enveloped by a variety of native trees such as Breadfruit, Rambo tans, and fragrant shrubs. It served as a crucial transit point for enslaved individuals who were to be sold to the outside world following the abolition of slavery in 1873, particularly in the Middle East. From 1880 to 1905, the Slave Chambers were utilized as a hiding place for the captured slaves as they awaited their sale. The Arabs used the chambers as a storage area for their human cargo before shipping them off.
The Zanzibar Slave Tour is a four-hour guided excursion that commences and concludes at your resort. Mangapwani, also known as “Arab Shore,” is located in a district where many Arabs resided prior to the violent revolution that took place in Zanzibar in 1964. In the village, visitors can explore the ruins of a large government “Bungalow” that was originally built by the Arabs who owned Prison Island. The newly opened Serena Restaurant is in close proximity to the Slave Caves, offering the opportunity for swimming and sunbathing if desired.
Explore Central Market
Begin your journey at Kelele Square and venture through the winding alleys of Stone Town to the residence of the former trader Tippu Tip. From there, make your way to the largest market in Stone Town, located at Mkunazini. This historic site is where slaves were brutally whipped before being auctioned off, offering a sobering glimpse into the island's past.
Discover Dr. David Livingstone's House
Next, visit the house of Dr. David Livingstone, a renowned advocate for the abolition of slavery. His relentless efforts played a pivotal role in bringing an end to the slave trade in 1873. The house stands as a testament to his dedication and the significant impact he had on history.
Uncover the Mangapwani Ruins & Caves
Continue your tour with a visit to the Maruhubi Ruins, where 99 enslaved women were forced to entertain the Arab Sultan of Zanzibar in a luxurious palace between 1870 and 1888. The ruins tell a tragic tale of exploitation and the harsh realities faced by many during that era.
Final Stop at Mangapwani Chambers
Conclude your tour at the Mangapwani chamber, a somber site where slaves were held while waiting for monsoon winds to carry boats that would take them into exile. This final stop offers a poignant reminder of the dark chapter in Zanzibar's history, making it a fitting end to a day steeped in reflection and learning.
